This is the COMPLETE recording of the Sound of Music BBS
GROUP CHAT held on February 25, 1990 at 10 pm.
This is the FIRST in a series of chats that will be held on a regular
basis on SOM.
We've provided this file since there are many undocumented features that
have been provided by Quarterdeck in this file. Please read through the
entire file, remembering that the numbers at the left indicate the node
that was accessing the chat to input a statement. Follow the chat by
reading through the individuals comments.
You can reach Quarterdeck Office Systems directly on SOM in the DESQview
Conference, #6. Leave all messages in that conference, PUBLIC, and
addressed to QUARTERDECK TECH. You'll receive a very prompt reply.
--------------------------------------------------
(2 ) David : hi David, this is Paul...you're the first one online, and
(2 ) David : we're just about ready to get started over here....hope
(2 ) David : that you enjoy the FIRST LIVE CHAT on the Sound of Music
(2 ) David : BBS. If there are any problems there are 3 co-sysops here
(2 ) David : monitoring all the monitors to make sure that everything
(2 ) David : operates just fine.
(2 ) David : Ok, if anything goes haywire I'll give a yell. I'm looking
(2 ) David : forward to this, and thany you for the invatition.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: good evening.
(2 ) David : Hi! Hows everything in Santa Monica?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I am just waiting for everyone to arrive.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Just fine. I am actually no calling from Santa Monica.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I'll explain when everyone arrives. I have prepared a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: little bio.
(8 ) Paul : Ahh, er David?
(2 ) David : Yes?
(8 ) Paul : I do have a burning question, IF we're ready?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: actually we have a couple of lines still free
(5 ) Barry : Hi this is Barry Miller co sysop of SOM Paul, robert and I
(5 ) Barry : will be operating of my name
(6 ) Robert : Hi Eric, can you give us an idea what we should be
(6 ) Robert : expecting to disscuss in this forum?
(8 ) Paul : I do have aquestion for QOS, when we're all ready.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Well, I'll give everyone a little background on myself and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: then you can starrt asking questions.
(5 ) Barry : May I suggest we all use the g/a convention at the end of
(5 ) Barry : our sentences to indicate we have finished and another can
(5 ) Barry : go ahead g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: The lines seem to be nearly full. following is a little
(1 ) Quarterdeck: info about myself.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I am Eric Wieling a.k.a The Quarterdeck Tech. I have
(1 ) Quarterdeck: been providing tech support on SmartNet via The sound of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: music since around September of 1989. I came to work for
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Quarterdeck as a summer job in Tech Support and ended up
(1 ) Quarterdeck: staying over six months. I think it was the great Southern
(1 ) Quarterdeck: California weather. In the time that I have been at
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Quarterdeck I have seen many improvements in quality of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: tech support. Quarterdeck installed a new phone system in
(1 ) Quarterdeck: June and hired 4 new people in the Tech Support area. If
(1 ) Quarterdeck: you haven't called Quarterdeck Tech support since June,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: you are in for a pleasant surprise.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I recently returned to Ferris State University in Big
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Rapids, Michigan for another term and am working toward a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: degree in Computer Information Systems. I but have decided
(1 ) Quarterdeck: to return to Quarterdeck in May of 1990 to work part time
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and transfer to a university in the Los Angles area.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: When I was planning to leave Quarterdeck to return to
(1 ) Quarterdeck: school I was asked to continue my support on The Sound of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Music and was glad to accept. I am currently providing
(1 ) Quarterdeck: support on SmartNet via The Sound of Music and on FidoNet
(1 ) Quarterdeck: via SeaHunt BBS. I enjoy working for Quarterdeck and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: doing Tech Support via telephone and BBS. I do keep in
(1 ) Quarterdeck: close contact with Quarterdeck, contacting them several
(1 ) Quarterdeck: times a week.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I am currently running DESQview 2.26 on an IBM PC/XT
(1 ) Quarterdeck: clone running at 4.77mhz/10mhz. I have a 20meg hard
(1 ) Quarterdeck: drive, CGA graphics, 640K motherboard memory, an "EMS 4.0"
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Intel Aboveboard (NOT the AboveBoard Plus), 2400 baud
(1 ) Quarterdeck: modem and a Bernouli box. I use WordPerfect, EZ-Reader,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: RBComm, Q-DOS II, and am running DOS 3.3. Many of you may
(1 ) Quarterdeck: be laughing by now, but this is all the system I could
(1 ) Quarterdeck: afford on a student's budget. When I was working at
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Quarterdeck I used both an AST Premium/286 and a 386
(1 ) Quarterdeck: clone. I long for the time when I can afford a 386.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: g/a
(8 ) Paul : No laughs, Eric, g/a
(5 ) Barry : Eric, can I start with a aquestioan Paul has experienced
(5 ) Barry : here at SOM? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: sure g/a
(5 ) Barry : We ahave been alookian at DOS 4 and have found
(5 ) Barry : inconsistenciesaa in the manual and Manifest....a
(5 ) Barry : The manual and aaone of youra bualletins specifically say
(5 ) Barry : not...
(5 ) Barry : to use the X switch for buffers etc,but Manifest in its
(5 ) Barry : hints say Pauls version of DOS 4 is OK and the X switch
(5 ) Barry : should be used g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: You should be able to use the /X switch on BUFFERS, VDISK,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and FASTOPEN if you have QEMM-386 5.0 or above. g/a
(6 ) Robert : I would like to know if Desq View is available to run on
(6 ) Robert : 386 Sx and or 486? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview-386 will run on a 386sx, 386, and 486 machines g/a
(6 ) Robert : If you have a 286 version of Desq View, do you have to buy
(6 ) Robert : a whole new package, or can you get a upgrade? If so, how
(6 ) Robert : much how does it cost? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Retail: DESQview 2.26 = 129.95
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Retail: QEMM-386, QEMM-50/60 = 99.95
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Retail: QRAM = 79.95
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Retail: Manifest = 59.95 g/a
(7 ) Phil : Can I get a comparison of qram and move'em?
(7 ) Phil : I use qemm on my 386 but am now looking to expand my
(7 ) Phil : 286 and have been thinking of one or the other. I dont
(7 ) Phil : use desqview and therefore the other products are of
(7 ) Phil : lesser concern. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Sorry, I don't have any information on Move'em. However
(1 ) Quarterdeck: if you go with all Quarterdeck products you can go to one
(1 ) Quarterdeck: source for Tech Support and are sure they will be
(1 ) Quarterdeck: compatable.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Infoworld should have some comparasons
(1 ) Quarterdeck: of QRAM and Move'em g/a
(8 ) Paul : Eric, have you folks experimented with any CompuAdd 386
(8 ) Paul : boxes?
(8 ) Paul : Specifically the compuAdd 320 g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Let me check my database for CompuAdd 386.....
(1 ) Quarterdeck: We have one report of floppy drive problems unless the IA
(1 ) Quarterdeck: parameter is used with QEMM-386 g/a
(8 ) Paul : Ok, the 320 which I have been assisting on, is running
(8 ) Paul : 2.25 and Qemm 4.23. The machine locks. I've tried
(8 ) Paul : excluding video (Vega Video-7) ,etc. I have heard of
(8 ) Paul : compatibility problems with ComPuAdd. Any thing else other
(8 ) Paul : than drives? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: If you know what BIOS it has I can do a search on that. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Thanks, will check BIOS, and get back. g/a
(5 ) Barry : David is waiting with a question after this thread is
(5 ) Barry : finished can we give him a shot? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: go ahead david g/a
(2 ) David : I'm using a 286/12 with no EMS (thats all this student
(2 ) David : could afford), nowI wonder if QRam could help me in any
(2 ) David : way? I'm suffering from a problem with not having enough
(2 ) David : memory. And want to try and run more that I do now. Now I
(2 ) David : have to exit DV and run some of the things (ventura
(2 ) David : publisher and etc). I'm using Compaq dos 3.31 and have 3.8
(2 ) David : meg eXTENDed memory. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: QRAM uses the same areas of HighRAM to load stuff into
(1 ) Quarterdeck: that DESQview does. Here is some more info on QRAM.....
(1 ) Quarterdeck: QRAM will work on nearly ANY EMS memory board, however
(1 ) Quarterdeck: there are severe limitations to running QRAM on an EMS 3.2
(1 ) Quarterdeck: or a software compatible EMS 4.0 memory board.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Please NOTE: QRAM will ONLY work on EMS boards or machines
(1 ) Quarterdeck: that have the C&T Neat Chipset g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, does your machine have a C&T NEAT ChipSet? g/a
(2 ) David : No
(2 ) David : (unfortunatly) g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Then I am afraid that you need EMS memory to use QRAM.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Remember that the 286 does not have the hardware to turn
(1 ) Quarterdeck: exTENded memory into HARDWARE compatable EMS 4.0 memory
(1 ) Quarterdeck: g/a
(2 ) David : I guess upgrading to an SX would help? Would an SX
(2 ) David : virtualize the direct screen writes as would a full
(2 ) David : blooded 386 would? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: QEMM-386 sees a 386 and a 386sx as the SAME thing.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: A 386sx has all the memory management capibilities of a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: full 386. g/a
(2 ) David : Ok, Does DV see the SX and 386 as the same things too?
(2 ) David : g/a (oops)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Yes g/a
(8 ) Paul : QOS, can you give us some pointers on what to look for
(8 ) Paul : when we buy a 386 or 386 SX, when it comes to
(8 ) Paul : compatibility. Video, etc. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Well, most 386 machines have quite good compatability with
(1 ) Quarterdeck: QEMM-386. However, let me check my database for some
(1 ) Quarterdeck: specific machines that have had trouble in the past..... g/a
(8 ) Paul : The "AT" standard doesn't exist, and I'm confused as to
(8 ) Paul : what to reccomend anymore. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: The most common problems are BIOS incompatabilities and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: add on cards. Most often 3270/5250 emulation boards and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: other "not so common" add on cards. Software is the most
(1 ) Quarterdeck: often thing that is incompatable. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Thanks, I was wondering if we should look out for any
(8 ) Paul : Video cards which might not be so easy to use qemm with.
(8 ) Paul : g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I can give you several BIOSes that we have had trouble
(1 ) Quarterdeck: with. The most common problems is the NEED to EXCLUDE=
(1 ) Quarterdeck: parts of the video ROM, I'll check on specific problem
(1 ) Quarterdeck: cards...... g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: AST 3G Plus 2
(1 ) Quarterdeck: You can't ROM the video ROM on these EGA
(1 ) Quarterdeck: cards with QEMM - they do something funny with
(1 ) Quarterdeck: memory-mapped I/O. More or less immediate crashes happen
(1 ) Quarterdeck: with the ROM parameter on QEMM........ g/a
(6 ) Dan : I have a question regarding VGA modes
(6 ) Dan : I am wondering if there is any specific advantage to
(6 ) Dan : loading an 8 bit or 16 bit VGA card into a system when I
(6 ) Dan : will be using QEMM or DV? In other words in reading the
(6 ) Dan : QEMM 5.0 manual, I've found that in using NOEGA give me
(6 ) Dan : more memory in the 1 Meg memory area? Should I buy an 8
(6 ) Dan : bit or 16 bit VGA card for a DV system? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 16 bit video cards sometimes need to have 16 bit ROM
(1 ) Quarterdeck: accessing turned off.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: However, since the RAM access is a large part of the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: reason for the speedup in a 16 bit card, most users can
(1 ) Quarterdeck: live with this. g/a
(6 ) Dan : Any specific cards that I should stay away from? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Not really, but DESQview can do a better job of saving and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: resoring some of the Super-VGA modes on the Paradise and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Video-7 cards.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview 2.26 has much better support for thre higher VGA
(1 ) Quarterdeck: modes g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David had a question. g/a
(2 ) David : I have heard that some of the high speed modems will lose
(2 ) David : information when transfering on an XT or AT based PC in
(2 ) David : DesqView. Is there any truth to that? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: There is some truth. The MOST inportant factor in doing
(1 ) Quarterdeck: comm over 1200 baud on an XT or AT is if your EMS card has
(1 ) Quarterdeck: alternate mapps. Alternate mapps allow DESQview to mapp a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: program into conventional memory much faster, and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: therefore allow your comm program program to service
(1 ) Quarterdeck: incomming information better.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I runhave run 2400 baud on my XT at 4.77mhz with no
(1 ) Quarterdeck: alternate mapps and it getts a little iffy. g/a
(2 ) David : Just currious, since I have found that if I set the time
(2 ) David : slice to too small a number for Telix, it seems to start
(2 ) David : loosing data, and get lots of garbage. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Telix seems not to be getting enuf time slices to service
(1 ) Quarterdeck: the incomming interupts. What speed are you running
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, I'll get to your SCSI question in a min. g/a
(8 ) Paul : David, I see the sane thing at 9600 on my 8.0 mhz clone.
(8 ) Paul : g/a
(2 ) David : Modem: 2400, CPU:8/12 g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, What EMS board? g/a
(2 ) David : Have no EMS. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: oh. I also have that problem if I set my background ticks
(1 ) Quarterdeck: too low and go to another window and do disk intensive
(1 ) Quarterdeck: stuff. g/a
(2 ) David : Thanks, I originally just thought it was me. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: A buffered UART MIGHT help. I am NO expert on comm under
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DV. You might want to ask the question in the DV conf
(1 ) Quarterdeck: here. g/a
(2 ) David : Ok, will do. I can't seem to change the Uart though g/a
(5 ) Barry : Eric, i run my BBS on SCSIa drives with a device drive
(5 ) Barry : acan that be loadeda high? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, Whigh SCSI drive do you have?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and driver do you gave. g/a
(5 ) Barry : I have a Maxtor 3380 330 mb drive g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, what is the name of the driver? g/a
(5 ) Barry : it is a SCSI device driver wriiten by a local company here
(5 ) Barry : for there SCSI host adapter g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: If the driver makes your SCSI drive compatable with the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: V86 mode of the 386 than NO YOU CAN'T. If it is for
(1 ) Quarterdeck: something else, then you should be able to. g/a
(5 ) Barry : thanks, I will check on it g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Other Questions?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I have a question. I would like a little feedback on how
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I have been doing in the DV conf. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Now that we have DV 2.26, QEMM5.0 Manifest QRAm, what is
(8 ) Paul : the fuure lokkin like at QOS? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: You like to ask hard questions, don't you. Well... let me
(1 ) Quarterdeck: see.... I have not heard of DESQview 3.0, we do have one
(1 ) Quarterdeck: software project for a new product, but I can't say
(1 ) Quarterdeck: anything more about that. We are not even sure it is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: going to work, but we are trying.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: If we release it it will be FAR in the future.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I also hope to see a new DESQview manual sometime in the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: future. g/a
(8 ) Paul : That's the spirit! We love it! g/a with your question. g/a
(6 ) Dan : In the same vein, are their any talks at QOS for
(6 ) Dan : addressing OS/2? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I have not heard of any talk of OS/2, but I am not privy
(1 ) Quarterdeck: to lots of stuff. g/a
(5 ) Barry : Eric, I am running DV2.22 and just got a 386. I have
(5 ) Barry : ordered qemm5 from Paul, should I go to DV 2.26 g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, what 386? g/a
(5 ) Barry : a 386 SX clone g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview 2.26 has four big improvements.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 1) If you have an IBM PS/2 Mod 55sx or Mod 70, get 2.26 it
(1 ) Quarterdeck: has special support for the BIOS changes in these
(1 ) Quarterdeck: machines.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 2) if you have a Paradise or Video-7 card and like S-VGA,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 2.26 will help.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 3) We have specific support for the NEW IBM 3270 emulation
(1 ) Quarterdeck: program.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and 4) We have new/better keyoards conflicts.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: g/a
(5 ) Barry : thanks, I guess I wiall go ahead and update especially...
(5 ) Barry : since I will abe putting a second node up
(1 ) Quarterdeck: there are other minor changes, but those are the biggest
(1 ) Quarterdeck: ones.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: g/a
(5 ) Barry : one thing i don't truly understand is the "protection"
(5 ) Barry : setting g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: let me see where that note on protection levels is.....
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Q: What is the "Protection level" field in Change a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Program used for?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Q: Why does my program run slower when I use protection
(1 ) Quarterdeck: level?
(1 ) Quarterdeck:
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Q: Will Protection level "fix" my ill-behaved programs?
(1 ) Quarterdeck:
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Q: What does Protection level do on my 286?
(1 ) Quarterdeck:
(1 ) Quarterdeck: The "Protection level" field of Change a Program can be
(1 ) Quarterdeck: changed on any machine running DESQview, but only becomes
(1 ) Quarterdeck: active on 386 machines.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Protection level uses the paging capability of the 386 to
(1 ) Quarterdeck: trap programs which perform operations outside of their
(1 ) Quarterdeck: normal memory space or which use interrupts in
(1 ) Quarterdeck: unconventional and potentially destructive ways. Such
(1 ) Quarterdeck: operations could be considered "ill-behaved", and might be
(1 ) Quarterdeck: symptomatic of programs which are in the process of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: crashing the system. g/a
(5 ) Barry : would bbs software (communications) fall into this
(5 ) Barry : category g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, Not generally....
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Protection level is primarily provided for use with
(1 ) Quarterdeck: programs that have proven to be unreliable while running
(1 ) Quarterdeck: in DESQview. Setting protection level for these programs
(1 ) Quarterdeck: should usually prevent them from bringing down the system
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and the messages produced when the protection error is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: trapped may serve to suggest to the developer of the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: program what they might be doing wrong.

(1 ) Quarterdeck: The specifics of the program operations that are trapped
(1 ) Quarterdeck: at different levels of protection are proprietary to
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Quarterdeck, but in general, the higher the number, the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: more "ill-behaved" operations will be trapped and examined.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: g/a
(5 ) Barry : thanks g/a
(2 ) David : One thing here, i'd be intrested in hearing what your
(2 ) David : systems are and what your primamty reason for getting DV.
(2 ) David : g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David---> My system personally? Or the one I use at work?
(1) Quarterdeck: g/a
(2 ) David : Where you do your I guess most DVing (if thatsa word). g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I like DESQview for it's multi-taskinf, limited as it is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: on MY configuration, and the ability to "Hot Key" between
(1 ) Quarterdeck: programs. Mark and Transfer ain't bad either!
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I run DESQview on my machine about 98% of the time. g/a
(2 ) David : What about everyone else? g/a
(8 ) Paul : I boot into DV, everytime! g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I see most people focusing on the Multi-tasking abilities
(1 ) Quarterdeck: of DESQview and ingoring the other benifits of DESQview. g/a
(5 ) Barry : I ran my bbs under DV to have a maintenance window.a...
(5 ) Barry : now on my new 386 I intend to put up a second node running
(5 ) Barry : under DV and still use a maintenance window g/a
(2 ) David : Do BBS's "behave" in DV? I'm looking into starting one, g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, Many BBSes work great under DV. WildCat! is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DVaware, OPUS runs well. Just look at the taglines in the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview Echo. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Sysops with 386 machines love it. Another computer for
(1 ) Quarterdeck: only "$189.90" g/a
(5 ) Barry : quite true Eric, alota of bang for the buck g/a
(8 ) Paul : Eric, QRAM and backfilled 286 memory... I can't get DV to
(8 ) Paul : work with FL=0 and FORCEENS. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Paul, FL=0 as a DESQview parameter? g/a
(8 ) Paul : No, QRAM parameter.
(8 ) Paul : I think my problem is the Above Board Plus, anyway. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Paul, I can't find my QRAM manual (I don't use QRAM) what
(1 ) Quarterdeck: is the full name of the parameter?
(1 ) Quarterdeck: <mumbling to myself> "Where is that darn QRAM manual" g/a
(8 ) Paul : Frame Length. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Paul, I think QRAM might have a FRAME=NONE parameter. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Ohh, I'll try anything, Once.g/a
(2 ) David : Last thing, if you could suggest one improvement to my AT,
(2 ) David : what would it be? g/a
(5 ) Barry : David, I would suggest a good hardware support EMS board g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, in order of desireability... 1) set a 386SX, 2) get
(1 ) Quarterdeck: an All ChargeCard, 3) get an EMS board that will map
(1 ) Quarterdeck: highRAM and has laternate mapps. g/a
(5 ) Barry : Eric, I still have my 286 and my Rampage board. Will QRAM
(5 ) Barry : do anything for me?
(5 ) Barry : so I may get a window size increase running running DV? g/a
(5 ) Barry : Eric my board is a RAMpage 286 g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, If you are not running DESQview, YES. If you are
(1 ) Quarterdeck: running DESQview, then probibly, but QRAM loads stuff into
(1 ) Quarterdeck: many of the same areas that DESQview wants to put code
(1 ) Quarterdeck: into. If you have more highRAM available than DESQview
(1 ) Quarterdeck: uses than QRAM will make use of the unused part.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Barry, the AST RAMpage board is EEMS with the REMM.SYS
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 3.x drivers and EMS 4.0 with the REMM 4.x drivers. g/a
(2 ) David : I have an AST adantage board sitting in my computer, can
(2 ) David : this thing do anything special? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I beleive that the AST RAMvantage boards are only hardware
(1 ) Quarterdeck: LIM 3.2 so you would need to give up most access to EMS
(1 ) Quarterdeck: memory. g/a
(2 ) David : A wha? RAMvantage?
(2 ) David : I have an Advantage g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, I belive that the AST Advantage is hardware EMS 3.2
(1 ) Quarterdeck: too.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: The Advantage MAY be an exTENded memory only board, I an
(1 ) Quarterdeck: not sure. g/a
(2 ) David : I got no drivers with it, was I supposed to? It was second
(2 ) David : hand. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, you can give the AST bbs a try at 714-852-1872 and
(1 ) Quarterdeck: try to d/l a driver for it. g/a
(2 ) David : I'll try to try them some time this week, Thanx. g/a
(2 ) David : Ok, I am not sure about what it has cause I got no manuals
(2 ) David : or what ever with it. Anyway, thanx for AST's BBS#. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I don't have anything in my database about the AST
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Advantage. g/a
(2 ) David : Ok then, Like I said, I'll try and give them a buzz
(2 ) David : sometime this week or so. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Good! What about VIDRAM? Any hardware limitations?
(8 ) Paul : I mean, any cards which we shouldn't expect to get more
(8 ) Paul : conventional memory, if we use VIDRAM? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I havn't heard of any. BUT, if your machine puts any ROM
(1 ) Quarterdeck: at the top of 640K (like some of the HP Vectra's and a few
(1 ) Quarterdeck: disk controllers) then VidRam cannot give you that extra
(1 ) Quarterdeck: memory as conventional memory, only as HighRam.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I have had trouble running VidRam on an AST Premium/286
(1 ) Quarterdeck: with a Hercules color VGA card. g/a
(8 ) Paul : Thanks, I was just wondering. Haven't tried, yet. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Here is a treat for everyone........
(1 ) Quarterdeck: a FEW undocumented DESQview switches......
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /DOSTERM (/DT)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch makes us let DOS do the terminating of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: applications. By default, we terminate applications
(1 ) Quarterdeck: without calling DOS to do it. This is considered
(1 ) Quarterdeck: consistent since we don't let DOS do the loading of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: programs. Some networks and TSRs can't keep track of
(1 ) Quarterdeck: programs if they see a terminate without a corresponding
(1 ) Quarterdeck: load. However, some DOS utilities (most notably SHARE)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and some networks won't be able to keep track of programs
(1 ) Quarterdeck: if they don't see terminates.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /GENERICEEM (/EE)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch forces our expanded memory driver to use EEMS
(1 ) Quarterdeck: calls to talk to Rampage boards. By default we talk
(1 ) Quarterdeck: directly to the ports (which is much faster) if a pre-EMS
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 4 driver is loaded on a Rampage board. However, some
(1 ) Quarterdeck: disk caches and other EMS TSRs need to intercept and see
(1 ) Quarterdeck: the EMS calls, and/or will make their own EMS calls by
(1 ) Quarterdeck: cascading to the INT 67h handler in place before DV
(1 ) Quarterdeck: (thus making it so DV cannot massage the calls), and these
(1 ) Quarterdeck: behaviors would require this switch. Note that high
(1 ) Quarterdeck: speed communications will stop working if this switch is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: used because the bank-switching time to make EEMS calls
(1 ) Quarterdeck: through REMM is too great.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /NOSETUP (/NS)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch causes DV to not read in the DVSETUP.DV file
(1 ) Quarterdeck: (which contains all of the information provided by the DV
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Setup program). Without the setup file, no graphics
(1 ) Quarterdeck: driver is loaded and no mouse is supported and all other
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Setup options are set to their default values.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /OLDKEYBOARD (/OK)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch tells DV to make the old-style interrupt 16h
(1 ) Quarterdeck: test/wait-for-input calls (functions 0, 1) instead of the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: new-style calls (functions 10h, 11h) to get its keys.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This is necessary for BIOSes that erroneously claim they
(1 ) Quarterdeck: support the new keyboard calls (i.e. old Award BIOSes).
(1 ) Quarterdeck: It is also necessary for compatibility with keyboard
(1 ) Quarterdeck: enhancers and keyboard monitors that don't support the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: new calls. Note that Sidekick will not pop up
(1 ) Quarterdeck: consistently when DV is running on a DOS 4 system (since
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DOS 4 makes new-style keyboard calls) without this
(1 ) Quarterdeck: switch.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /RAMPAGE (/RP)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch forces our expanded memory driver to talk
(1 ) Quarterdeck: directly to the ports of a Rampage board. By default, if
(1 ) Quarterdeck: an EMS 4 driver is loaded, we will make EMS calls to do
(1 ) Quarterdeck: mapping. This is necessary for compatibility with
(1 ) Quarterdeck: disk caches and other EMS TSRs which intercept EMS calls,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: and/or make their own EMS calls by cascading to the INT
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 67h handler in place before DV (thus making it so DV
(1 ) Quarterdeck: cannot massage the calls). However, using the driver to
(1 ) Quarterdeck: do mapping is much slower than talking directly to the
(1 ) Quarterdeck: ports, so to do high speed communications with a REMM 4
(1 ) Quarterdeck: driver would require this switch.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: /COMMLOAD=c (/CL=c)
(1 ) Quarterdeck: This switch takes one of 3 characters to indicate whether
(1 ) Quarterdeck: parts of DV should be loaded in conventional memory or
(1 ) Quarterdeck: not. The EMM.DVR driver, the stack which DV uses for
(1 ) Quarterdeck: hardware interrupts, and the code for hardware interrupt
(1 ) Quarterdeck: handlers with behavior=B all are loaded according to this
(1 ) Quarterdeck: switch. By default, DV loads these pieces in high memory
(1 ) Quarterdeck: unless high memory is timed to be more than twice as slow
(1 ) Quarterdeck: as low memory. In that case, DV loads the pieces in low
(1 ) Quarterdeck: memory. The three valid characters are:
(1 ) Quarterdeck: F: load into high memory if available unless high
(1 ) Quarterdeck: memory is more than twice as slow as low memory
(1 ) Quarterdeck: (this is the current default).
(1 ) Quarterdeck: H: load into high memory regardless of how slow it is.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: L: load into low memory even if high memory is
(1 ) Quarterdeck: available and reasonably fast.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: That's all the undocumented DESQview switched for now.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Pleasse note that most of these switches are for DESQview
(1 ) Quarterdeck: 2.20 > g/a
(8 ) Paul : Thanks alot, Eric. g/a
(2 ) David : Is there any way to get 43 line mode without loading the
(2 ) David : EGA.GRF [?] file?
(2 ) David : And can I use UltraVisions 132x43 and such modes in DV? g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: David, I believe that if you load the Monochrome driver
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview will still allow you to use 43 line mode, but I
(1 ) Quarterdeck: have never tried it.
(1 ) Quarterdeck: DESQview will not usually run with 132X43 line mode,
(1 ) Quarterdeck: though I wish we had specific support for it. g/a
(2 ) David : I have tried loading in the monochrome file and nope. By
(2 ) David : not using the EGA file I could get some more ram g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Let me check on something a min.....
(1 ) Quarterdeck: Someone on FidoNet claimed he could do what you were
(1 ) Quarterdeck: trying to do, but I don't have a copy of the message here. g/a
(2 ) David : Do you think you could look into it for me? I get at times
(2 ) David : an extra 30-45kb ram to use! g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I will look into it for you. Leave me a message if don't
(1 ) Quarterdeck: get back to you in a few days. g/a
(2 ) David : THANKS! G/A
(4 ) Paul : I guess it's time that I drop in say that this is the
(4 ) Paul : sysop of SOM, and I want to thank Eric Weiling for coming
(4 ) Paul : on to SOM and offering this Chat with the users of SOM. I
(4 ) Paul : would like to thank Eric for all his support of the DV
(4 ) Paul : conference, and for all the input he has offered for
(4 ) Paul : Smartnet. Smartnet has been growing within the past month
(4 ) Paul : and now more systems across the nation are coming online
(4 ) Paul : to obtain the DESQview conference. I want to thank
(4 ) Paul : everyone for participating in this online chat with Eric,
(4 ) Paul : and to inform all of you that the CHAT has been recording
(4 ) Paul : to disk and will be available for downloading from SOM
(4 ) Paul : tomorrow evening in the file DV022590.ZIP. You'll find
(4 ) Paul : it directly in the DESQview conference upload directory.
(4 ) Paul : We have to bring this chat to a close now, resume normal
(4 ) Paul : board activities, but do not want any one to forget their
(4 ) Paul : questions regarding DV and QOS products. Please leave
(4 ) Paul : PUBLIC messages in the DESQview conference, and I am sure
(4 ) Paul : that Eric will be back online tomorrow to pick them up in
(4 ) Paul : his normal Markmail run. g/a
(2 ) David : Thanks to Paul and Eric for this! g/a
(8 ) Paul : Ditto, Thanks to both! g/a
(6 ) Dan : thanks everyone and good night g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: I glad to be participating in the chat and would be
(1 ) Quarterdeck: willing to do another sometime in the future. Thank you
(1 ) Quarterdeck: all for participating. g/a
(4 ) Paul : We'll work on that, and will inform everyone on the board
(4 ) Paul : of the next Quarterdeck Office Systems online chat. g/a
(1 ) Quarterdeck: good night all g/a
